Eastern Albay Commute and Legazpi to Bulusan Road Trip

My plan was to do a commuting tour of three towns/cities dotting the western coast of Albay (Tiwi, Tabaco City, and Santo Domingo) before going on the long ride from Legazpi City to Bulusan, Sorsogon. I dropped off infront of the Tiwi Church after an amazing jeepney ride along the PARTIDO coastal highway. I first knew of Tiwi, Albay because of its famous hot springs, a regular item on our Philippine geography class waaaay back in elementary school. I only had time to visit the old church in Tiwi unfortunately because I had other plans that day. At first glance of the Tiwi Church,  I wasn’t awed by a sense of grandeur but by the subtle charm of its dark facade.

Philippine Department of Tourism taps Korean market via trade fairs, joint promos

The Department of Tourism (DOT) will continue to build on the industry-leading Korean tourist market with its participation in the 14th Busan International Travel Fair (BITF) on 02-05 September, as well as other joint promotional activities.

“As our best performer, the Korean outbound market remains one of our focal points for the year. New direct and charter air services have been crucial in maintaining the upward trend, as have been our fruitful efforts in trade fairs where we have received much positive feedback. This year’s BITF will allow us to cement our status further as a preferred destination for Koreans,” said Tourism Secretary Alberto A. Lim.

BITF is the only travel event in Busan, Korea’s second largest city and second largest source of tourist traffic from the country. It is expected to attract more than 80,000 visitors and 220 exhibitors from over 30 countries this year.

In other activities, the DOT has pledged to co-sponsor trips to the Philippines for the 2011 Miss Korea beauty pageant winners, to be crowned on August 3. The winners will also be volunteering for the Bantay Bata Foundation during their stay.

The Philippines will also figure prominently in the promotional activities of Korean companies LG Household & Healthcare (H&H) and the Lotte Department Store in Sogong-dong for August and September. Six lucky purchasers of LG H&H’s ‘MINIS’ toiletry travel kit and two winners of Lotte’s “Philippine Summer Festival” shopping promo will win travel packages to the Philippines as prizes.

Korea is the country’s largest foreign tourist market, sending 740,622 visitors in 2010 for 21.04% of the record 3.52 million visitors last year. A total of 429,569 Korean visitors visited the country from January to June this year, registering a 28.76% growth over the same period last year.

Direct flights to Manila and Cebu from Seoul and Busan are available aboard Philippine carriers. Charter flights to other destinations, most notably Boracay via Kalibo, are seasonal.

Philippine Department of Tourism pledges P1M for Philippine Travel Mart 2011

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is giving all out support to the promotion domestic tourism through the Philippine Travel Mart (PTM) in September, organized by Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA).

amorita beach resort
Amorita Resort in Bohol

“Our partnership with PHILTOA has been very fruitful over the years especially in relation to our joint staging of the annual PTM. Exhibitors reported generating over P18.5 million pesos in on-site sales alone last year, which tells us that our public is eager to travel within the country,” said Secretary Alberto A. Lim.

Held in partnership with the DOT, the PTM is the country’s premiere tourism trade show exclusively showcasing local tourist destinations. Last year, some 143,535 buyers flocked to the three-day event for various tour packages on offer from exhibitors occupying some 346 booths.

The consumer promotion, now on its 22nd year, will feature a Sale ng Bayan on domestic tour packages and Biyahe-Info tourism seminars for students. Cultural presentations and an eco-chorale competition among high school and college choir groups will provide event entertainment.

A sneak peek of the event was made available at PHILTOA’s celebration of its 25th year in the industry last July, where it also unveiled its list of the Top Ten Luxe Destinations for 2011. The list includes three properties in Cebu, two in Boracay and one each in Bicol, Bohol, Marinduque, Palawan and Tagaytay.

PHILTOA is the largest association of registered inbound and domestic tour operators with allied members in the airline, hotel and tour transportation sectors.

The Philippine Travel Mart runs from September 1 to 4, 2011 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City. For details, visit www.philtoa.org.

Caramoan to Legazpi Commute: CamSur PARTIDO Coastal Highway

I initially planned to visit Calaguas Islands in Camarines Norte for my last stop in Bicol. Unfortunately, my plan didn’t push through. I had to pick a new destination … I found out about Lake Bulusan in Sorsogon after a bit of googling. Thank goodness Rex Tourist Inn had WiFi, otherwise I wouldn’t have known, in advance, about commuting to Lake Bulusan and the alternative way to get to Albay from CamSur. The popular option was to do the same route to Legazpi by riding the 4-hour ferry/van back to Naga and then a 2-hour van to Legazpi. Reviewing the map again, I saw a more interesting and shorter route via the coastal highway along the eastern towns of CamSur and Albay. I knew many travelers have done it before but wasn’t sure if the infrequent jeepney/bus trips in that area would agree with my schedule since I was coming all the way from Caramoan that morning.

Caramoan to Sabang Beach in San Jose, Camarines Sur

Before I left Caramoan, I made sure make a quick re-visit to the brick church to get morning shots. Caramoan has so many old Spanish-colonial churches with remarkable architectures. Reminds me so much of my hometown, Iloilo, where most of older towns still have their churches intact.

I took a habal-habal (single motorcycle) to Guijalo Port (P40 fare) and arrived at 6:45AM. After reviewing the schedule posted at the waiting area, I was happy I made in time for the 1st trip. The pumpboat ferry to Sabang  (2 hours; P120 fare) left at around 7:20AM. I was excited to take photos of the beautiful seaviews of Caramoan again :D

Sabang to Albay via CamSur’s PARTIDO Coastal Highway

When I arrived at Sabang Beach at 9:00AM, I didn’t find a jeep around only the vans going back to Naga City. I approached a habal-habal driver and asked for assistance catching a bus, which plies the coastal highway route to Albay. He told me the highway branches out at Sagñay town and he could take me there. I forgot how much it was but I remembered it was too expensive for my budget. I told him to take me to Goa town only so I could take pictures of Goa Church. The ride from Sabang Beach to Goa took 30 minutes (also forgot how much I paid him).

From Goa Church, I took a tricycle to the town’s integrated transport terminal (P7 fare) and got on the bus to Tiga-on (P10 fare). Dropped off at Tiga-on Public Market and looked for the jeepneys going to Tiwi, Albay. While wandering aimlessly around the market, I eventually found the place where the “Tiwi” jeepneys were parked. Nearby was a carinderia (eatery) with a sign “Best Halo-halo” plastered on its storefront. Cooling down with the “best” hal0-halo after a long and hot commute was very tempting. Unfortunately, they were out of ingredients at the time :( At 10:15AM, I ate luch at the same carinderia while waiting for the jeep to fill up.

I waited for another looooong hour and a half. I was worried the jeepney would never leave Tiga-on. At 11:40AM, the jeepney finally left the market … we were finally on our way to Tiwi, Albay via the coastal highway of Sagñay, Camarines Sur also called the “PARTIDO Riviera.” The jeepney ride from Tiga-on to Tiwi only took an hour (P60 fare) … much longer than my waiting time >:(

The scenic view from the zig-zagging road in Sagñay was really great! I couldn’t help getting on the top of the jeep after seeing some of the passengers do it. Even though the midday heat was unmerciful, the topload seats were surprisingly tolerable because of the cool breeze. I covered my head with my scarf so I won’t get sunburned :)
